[Primeurs] Château Lynch-Moussas 2022, 5ème Grand Cru Classé

We are delighted to present the 2022 vintage of Château Lynch-Moussas.

2022 is an exceptional vintage on several counts: exceptional climate, very deep color, high intensity of taste and superb concentration of aromas.

Presentation of the 2022 vintage by Axel Marchal, Doctor of Oenology and consultant oenologist for the Castéja family estates.

“Deep color, with purplish highlights. Aromatic expression is complex, precise, with nuances of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. The oak is well integrated, the palate is fresh, the texture continuous and a pulpy character is perceptible on the finish.”

Axel Marchal, Doctor of Oenology

Château Lynch-Moussas 2022 among the favorites of RVF (Revue Du Vin de France)

Summary of tasting notes and comments from the press :

Terre de Vins : 96-97
“A more “comfortable” yield has enabled a demanding blend. In addition to its usual finesse, this wine has a deep color, great fruitiness reminiscent of blueberry jelly, an appetizing juiciness and a fine smoky note. The tannic structure is perfect, present but supple, slender and slender enough to stand the test of time..”

Bernard Burtschy : 96-97
Over the past 20 years, progress has been impressive and the 2022 vintage marks an important milestone. With its liquorice notes, it is seductive while
masking a nice density. From a great classicism, he has gained in elegance to settle among the great Pauillacs with an unbeatable price ratio quality.

Markus Del Monego Tasting Book : 95
“Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very fine nose with fragrant fruit, blackcurrant, blackberries, hints of mild spices and subtle oak. On the palate well-balanced with juicy fruit, sweet red and dark berries, discreet toasting. Fine spiciness in the aftertaste with very convincing length.”

Vladimir Kauffman RVI : 95
“Elegant, with freshness and elegance. The fruit and the tannins raise the finesse of the wine.”

Georgina Hindle Decanter : 95
“Cool blue fruits on the nose, a little shy at this point. Intensely fruited, really rich and ripe but clean and clear, giving a depth of ripe blackcurrants but juicy, fresh and alive. Almost sharp, it’s intense with bite to the fruit and such lean tannins that give a firm but light grip to the mouth. I like the attack, it’s bold and confident but refined at the same time. Good fruit profile, balancing acidity and lovely lean, mineral tannins. Well structured, nothing too much or overdone with freshness throughout. Well worked with precision. Spicy, black pepper, cedar, tobacco, liquorice, a touch of coffee, but all giving nuance underneath the fruit, tannins and acidity. It’s concentrated no doubt, this has power, but is presented carefully with such a lifted, juicy finish. This will be a beauty.”

James Suckling : 94-95
“Extremely well done with a full body and nicely integrated tannins that give this tension and power. The structure is wonderful. Minty. Chocolate-covered coffee beans. Serious but fun.”

Olivier Poels Revue du Vin de France : 94-95
“The vintage takes off, with very expressive fruit and plenty of substance. It fills the mouth, with its notes of red fruit jelly and a finish of silky tannins.”

Jane Anson : 94
“Inky, powerful colour, edges of heady incense on the nose but this feels more rooted in Paullac for me than many vintages of Lynch Moussas, delivering intense cassis and dark fruit character, edges of crushed rose petals, clove and tar. Plenty of fresh mint leaf coming through as well, with a real sense of poise. It feels like part of the Château Batailley family this year, more than usual, a buy. 57% new oak.”

Jean-Marc Quarin : 93
“Beautiful purple red, with black hues. Very aromatic, fine, fruity, pure and subtle nose. In the mouth, the wine develops on a fat and complete body, class in touch and a beautiful aromatic relief. Persistence on fine tannins. It’s delicious! Aging could make it surpass Batailley. Blend: 74% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot. Alcohol level: 14°2 – pH: 3.8. Yield: 42 hl/ha

Thomas Boxberger : 92-95
“Lynch Moussas is the up-and-coming sister estate of Batailley from Pauillac. The 2022 Lynch Moussas is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, aged in 57% new barriques. Black color. Dense and enormously fleshy on the nose, the Lynch Moussas has very good intensity with balsamic notes overtones. In the mouth it also shows rich, intensely structured and very compact, with massive, dense tannin extraction. Very coherent extraction with plenty of breed and punchy depth. Creamy sweetness and nice, round style with cassis in the finish.”

Jeff Leve The Wine Cellar Insider : 92-94
“The nose shows its tobacco leaf, cedar, lead pencil and currant side with a single swirl. On the palate, the wine is soft, polished, and fresh, with black raspberries, currants, licorice ,and most importantly, sweetness, and lift to the red berries as well as a nice licorice accent on the back of the finish. Give it a few years in the cellar before pulling a cork, and it will be even better. The wine blends 74% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot. 14% ABV. 3.7 pH. The harvest took place September 8 – September 27. Drink from 2026-2050.”

Yves Beck Beckustator : 92-94
“74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot. Lynch-Moussas continues its upward progression with a series of additional details that adorn the complexity of the bouquet! Inviting nuances of licorice and dark berries complemented by notes of graphite. On the palate, the wine announces finesse. It’s a little backward on the attack, but the body and tannins quickly give it good support, while the acid structure energizes the finish. A wine that is beginning to take shape in terms of vigor and freshness. 2029-2047”

Neal Martin : 91-93
“The 2022 Lynch-Moussas was picked September 1-27, mostly in the morning with a light pumping over, aged in 57% new oak with 14,2% alcohol. It is quintessentially Pauillac on the nose, with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit. Very composed and linear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky entry. The acidity is nicely judged here, lending this Pauillac freshness and tension, quite precise with delicacy on the finish that is a welcome surprise after the warmth of te growing season. Excellent.”

Peter Winding Vinbladet : 91-93
“Light cherry and blackcurrant aromas. Velvety tannins, good body and very smooth finish.”

Jancis Robinson James Lawther : 16,5
“Cask sample. Leafy, dark-fruit aroma with a stony, graphite edge. Plentiful but well-honed tannins. Juicy fruit on the palate. Overall, well managed. Good effort from this estate. Could be GV.”

Jacques Dupont Le Point : 16
“Lovely fruity nose, supple, straightforward palate, dark berries, liquorice, tannic finish; serious. A greedy wine in the first part, then tight, quite elegant.”
