The 2017 Lynch Moussas, composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with a very pretty nose of red roses and chocolate box over a core of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and wild blueberries with touches of garrigue and wood smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, grainy backbone and oodles of freshness, finishing with great length and a mineral character coming through.

J. Suckling : 93

This is precise and linear with a very pretty center palate of tannins and a bright finish. Fresh acidity. Some hazelnuts just at the end, but it’s not from the wood. Elegant and refined.

The 2016 Lynch Moussas is a blend of 17% Merlot an 83% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at 48 hectoliters per hectare between 3 and 19 October. Matured in 60% new oak and the remainder one year old, this has a concentrated bouquet that offers tobacco-infused black fruit, briary and then with aeration, veins of pencil lead. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin cloaked in plenty of black fruit, quite spicy for Lynch Moussas with a touch of orange rind developing towards the finish. I appreciate the salinity on the aftertaste here. This is excellent and may well surpass the impressive 2015 last year.

J. Robinson : 17-

Sweet ink on the nose. Tasted just after Lynch-Bages, it’s obviously less dense and a little frailer but it is a good Lynch-Moussas and takes advantage of what the vintage has to offer. Long.

J. Suckling : 93

This is very dense and intense with lovely intensity and energy. Dense, round and savory tannins. Another winner from here.

The 2015 Lynch Moussas is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot cropped at 44 hl/ha between 17 September and 1 October. It has a very controlled bouquet at first with tightly wound raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, the oak nicely integrated and some lovely undergrowth aromas surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the acidity well judged, leading to a spice-tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. It is a very fine follow-up to the 2014 last year, with a freshness and class that I did not find conveyed ten years ago.

J. Suckling : 93

Extremely well done for the vintage in Pauillac with attractive dried flower, currant and light stone character. Medium to full body. Fine tannins.

J. Robinson : 17

Dark burly ruby. Very seductive scent. Drive and appeal. Not massive but very well balanced and convincing. Long. Nothing in excess. Very appetising.

R. Parker : 92

The Château Lynch-Moussas 2014 is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot picked 26 September and picked over the following three weeks, the same as the 2008 vintage according to Frédéric Castéja (compared to 10 days in 2013!) The wine is aged in 55% new French oak. It has a fragrant bouquet that shows a little more fruit intensity than the Batailley at this stage, perhaps more harmony. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins and a pure core of cedar-infused fruit. With impressive density and focus on the finish, this is a top-notch Lynch Moussas and perhaps the first year where it may surpass the Castèja family’s Batailley. Excellent.

J. Suckling : 94

Classic aromas of lead pencil, blackcurrants and currant bush. Medium to full body, velvety tannins and a focused finish. A beauty. So classy and serious. Best ever? Hard not to drink now. Almost all cabernet sauvignon. Try in 2020.

Blackcurrant, tomato stalk, cedar and tobacco – couldn’t be more classic in terms of flavour profile. Pert tannins with good acidity. Masterful, clever winemaking. Encapsulates tradition, and masters a tricky vintage. Very good.

J. Suckling : 90

A firm and silky wine with medium body, cedar, walnut and chocolate. Currants too. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Fine and delicious now.

R. Parker

The 2013 Lynch Moussas has a light but fresh bouquet with wild hedgerow and raspberry vintage, a little earthiness with a touch of wet tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly raw tannin. There is a touch of under-ripeness here, though it is still balanced and structured towards the lightly spiced finish. It’s one of those wines I might leave for a couple of years, because it has plenty of charm and freshness.

Very dark crimson. Scented and interesting. Tastes as though there is some terroir bounding out here. Somehow reminds me of alpine flowers (no connection whatsoever to the Gironde!). Much gentler tannins than most but no shortage of flavour and character. Most intriguing. Not that long term but lots of fun.

J. Suckling : 90

A wine with firm tannins and pretty fruit. Medium body, with fine texture and a medium finish. Not pushed and refined. Very pretty. Like it slightly better than 2011.

R. Parker : 90

A sleeper of the vintage as well as one of the finest efforts I have seen from this estate owned by Philippe Casteja, Lynch Moussas appears to be rising in quality. This seductive, medium-bodied, charming, endearing 2012 exhibits lovely cassis fruit as well as an attractive mid-palate and a surprisingly long finish. A hint of chocolate adds to its appeal. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

備考・コメント

J. Robinson : 16.5

Deliciously scented. Smells as if there is plenty of Cabernet Franc or just ripe Cabernet Sauvignon: both red and dark fruit, leafy, graphite/mineral. Lightish, elegant, finely built. Delicious even now. Shows much better than it did en primeur.

J. Suckling : 92

This is very rich for the vintage with a dried-berry and chocolate character. Full and rich with velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Intense and decadent for the vintage. Very well done. I like it better than the 2010. Better in 2018.

R. Parker

The 2011 Lynch Moussas is a very good effort from an estate that is making better and better wine, although it does not yet rank alongside the top Pauillacs. This mid-weight, ripe effort exhibits a deep ruby/plum/garnet color along with an attractive perfume of berry fruit, cedarwood and a touch of tobacco leaf, crisp acidity and moderately well-integrated tannin. Enjoy it over the next 10-12 years.

J. Robinson : 16.5

Very dark, concentrated ruby. Very fresh and minerally/pencil shavings on the nose. Soooo Cabernet! Nice succulent fresh Pauillac without enormous ambition but well balanced and should provide lovely medium-term drinking. More transparent than most. Dry finish.

J. Suckling : 93

This is solid for this estate with currant and chocolate character, full body and a velvety textured finish. Best ever from here?

R. Parker : 90

The 2010 is a strong effort and one of their best wines in a generation or more. Some toasty oak seems relatively strong, but not excessive. Deep ruby/purple, notes of black fruits as well as red currants, fig and plum are all present. The wine has a good bit of flesh, fat, but then shuts down in the finish, with moderately high tannins. By all counts, this is an excellent Pauillac that just needs a few years of cellaring to resolve some of its oak and tannin, but has the potential to be outstanding if given sufficient bottle age. It should last for two decades.

Mid crimson. Attractive, mineral, very classic Pauillac nose with lots of sweetness too. Very pleasing for the short term even if not one of the greats.

A fruity, deep ruby/purple-colored Pauillac, Lynch Moussas’ 2008 offers up uncomplicated, straightforward notes of black currants, cherries, tobacco leaf, and underbrush. It is a medium-bodied, ripe, plush, attractive, consumer-friendly offering to consume during its first 10-15 years of life.

J. Suckling : 92

Fragrant mix of cedar, leafy cassis and something more meaty. Lively, leafy on the palate. The characteristics of the vintage are well handled for a fresh, fine-grained wine.

A classic Pauillac, this is an obvious major improvement from the proprietors, the Casteja family. Sweet vanilla, tobacco leaf, black currant, licorice, and camphor are all present in this full-bodied, rich, moderately tannic wine, which is still under the radar and fairly priced. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

J. Robinson : 17

Elegant oak prominence on the nose, tight palate – really tightly wound, with its dense core of fruit and stylish oak. Dry and savoury, chewy and long-lived – only just drinkable now, in fact.

備考・コメント

J. Robinson : 17.5

Rather dull crimson. Grown-up wine that has depth of fruit and very serious winemaking effort (and expensive oak) in there. Full-on attempt to seduce with both very fine-boned fruit and some of the most expensive oak money can buy. Dry finish. A long-term player. The alcohol is certainly not at all obvious. The best Lynch Moussas I remember tasting.

R. Parker

An idea of just how good the 2005 vintage truly is can be gained by noting the success of Lynch-Moussas, one of Pauillac’s perennial underachievers. It possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as lovely aromas of sweet blueberries, black currants, flowers, and pain grille. Medium-bodied and elegant, with rich fruit, noticeable glycerin, and moderate tannin, it will be drinkable at an earlier age than most northern Medocs. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

備考・コメント

J. Robinson : 17.5

Quite complex and interesting. Real vivacity. No prisoners – not a suggestion of sweetness – but top quality stuff. Lots of life. Bumptious. No-one could call 2004 a failure on the basis of this (and many others)!

Beautiful aromas of blackberry, currant and light licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with big and velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Rich and tight wine with wonderful texture. Very well done for this estate. Best after 2010. 20,000 cases made.

R. Parker

The 2003 Lynch Moussas (an under-the-radar Pauillac) offers up notes of lead pencil shavings, red and black currants, surprisingly good acidity for this vintage, and melted, well-integrated tannins. Fully mature, and unlikely to improve, it can be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years

備考・コメント

J. Suckling

This shows an impressive nose of blackberries, flowers and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, with a good core of ripe tannins and a fresh, fruity finish. Slightly short but nicely done for the vintage. Best after 2007. 13,830 cases made.

R. Parker

A surprisingly good effort from this largely forgotten Pauillac, the 2002 Lynch Moussas possesses a deep ruby/purple color and an attractive nose of cassis, red currants, dried herbs, spice box, and cedar. The finish is short, but that should lengthen with further evolution in barrel. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014

One of the finest Lynch Moussas yet produced, the 1998 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet nose of cassis, medium body, fine purity, and admirable harmony. Not a blockbuster, it will provide delicious drinking in 1-2 years, and will last for 12-15 years.

N. Martin

Moderate purple core. The nose is thin with faint scents of wild strawberry. Black cherry fruits on light-bodied palate and moderate tannins. Fades quickly in the mouth. Tasted May 1999.

Wine Spectator

Good berry, chocolate and toasted oak character. Medium-bodied, slightly hollow at the center, but with ripe tannins. Plenty of sweet fruit.

Interestingly, I prefer this wine to its bigger, more renowned stablemate, Batailley. The cleanly made 1997 Lynch Moussas exhibits a dark, ruby/purple color, and ripe black currant and cassis notes. In the mouth, the wine reveals moderate intensity, good sweetness (from glycerin and ripeness, not sugar), and a short but adequate finish.

The most promising Lynch-Moussas ever? Dense dark ruby/purple-colored, with a textbook cassis nose with scents of smoky new oak and minerals, this focused wine exhibits layers of rich fruit, full body, and an excellent chewy texture without an excess of acidity or hard tannin. Long and impressively-endowed, this wine may merit a close to outstanding score. Wow!

J. Robinson : 16,5

Quite dark crimson. Savoury, evolved, rather toasty nose. Round and mild and easy to like. Very flattering even if not the most ambitious in terms of potential to age further. Could be fresher on the finish.

After bottling, the 1995 Lynch-Moussas is a very good wine, with a dark ruby color, spicy, cedary, cassis fruit in its moderately-endowed nose, good ripeness and flesh on the attack, and a dry, clean, moderately tannic finish with grip and delineation. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

J. Robinson : 17

Dark crimson. Very cool, rather austere but impressive nose. Lots of fruit concentration on the front palate. Then chew on the end, but this should provide good mature drinking eventually. Quite long.

I do not think I have ever seen a Lynch-Moussas with so much color, ripeness, and richness of fruit. Although monolithic, it is far more concentrated and balanced than other recent efforts. It should be drinkable early and last for 15 years.
